30th Apr 2025

Kenny Welsh, a member of our Guest Services Team at The Centre, discovered a fascinating police report from 1938 while doing some research on the local area. It reveals details about the early efforts to protect the beloved Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as Nessie. This document offers a glimpse into the ongoing mystery of Loch Ness, shedding light on historical attempts to preserve the creature as it was protected under local police guidance.

Speaking on the report, Kenny commented:

“I love the 1938 police report – it’s a piece of the jigsaw that makes up the story of Loch Ness and our elusive monster. It offers a rare glimpse into how even the police believed there might be something in the water.”

The report, penned by Chief Constable William Fraser, discusses the efforts made by authorities in the 1930s to warn the public and visitors of the desire to protect Nessie. It divulges how individuals like Peter Kent and Marion Stirling from London were determined to capture the creature, dead or alive, with plans to return with a harpoon gun and a team of men to hunt the mysterious monster. Chief Constable Fraser’s letter also reflects his commitment to ensuring the creature’s safety, despite the limited powers the police had at the time to protect it.

This report not only adds to the rich history of Loch Ness but also underscores the long-standing tradition of protecting Nessie, a legend that continues to captivate people worldwide.

In line with these historic efforts, we’re set to host its annual search for the Loch Ness Monster, bringing together enthusiasts and adventurers of all ages from across the globe. Our annual event, The Quest, will kick off on 22 May 2025, with a weekend full of interactive events designed to uncover new clues about Nessie’s whereabouts.

The full schedule includes boat tours with hydrophone equipment to listen for underwater sounds, exciting competitions, and a variety of family-friendly activities. We’ll also introduce cutting-edge technology this year, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), to capture high-resolution images of the depths of Loch Ness in a safe, non-invasive way. Volunteers will take part in a surface watch, scanning the waters for any signs of the mysterious creature. These advancements ensure that the search remains respectful of the environment, as the Centre strives to carry out its work in a measured and sustainable manner.

As we continue our search, we are committed to doing so in a way that is non-invasive and respectful of the creature and its environment. With advancements in technology, such as ROVs, we aim to carry out the search for Nessie in the safest and most careful way possible, ensuring that future generations can experience the wonder of Loch Ness for years to come.”
