Tales and Mythical Beasts
31st Oct 2023
Welcome to The Loch Ness Centre, where the mysterious and the mythical converge. Halloween is upon us, and what better time to delve into the world of Scottish folklore and discover the enchanting and eerie creatures that have haunted our imaginations for generations? Gather ’round, as we embark on a mythical journey, featuring the most famous monster of them all – Nessie, Scottish faeries, the siths, the ghillie dhu, kelpies, and selkies. Let the spooktacular tales begin!
Nessie: The Unmistakable Legend
Halloween wouldn’t be complete without a nod to the most iconic inhabitant of these waters – Nessie. The Loch Ness Monster, with her long, serpentine body, is as enigmatic as she is legendary. As the crisp October winds rustle through the trees and the water laps at the shore, who’s to say whether you might catch a glimpse of this elusive creature? But keep your camera ready; Nessie tends to be camera-shy!
The Mischief-Makers: Siths and Ghillie Dhu
Siths, mischievous Scottish faeries, have a knack for causing all sorts of Halloween havoc. These little troublemakers are known for playing tricks, and leading travellers astray are known for guarding every well, waterfall and loch. To keep them at bay, it’s said that ghillie dhu, or ‘a boy that’s cloaked in moss,’ guards the trees and forests of Scotland. This spectral figure maintains a watchful eye, ensuring that the siths don’t cause too much chaos.
Kelpies: The Shape-Shifting Horse Spirits
As the moon casts an eerie glow on the loch, we can’t forget the sinister kelpies. These shape-shifting water spirits often take the form of beautiful horses to lure unsuspecting travellers into the water. Once their prey is captivated, they transform into their true, monstrous selves and drag their victims beneath the surface. Don’t worry, though; we’re here at The Loch Ness Centre, and we won’t let these kelpies get anywhere near our curious visitors!
Selkies: The Seals of Scottish Folklore
Scottish folklore wouldn’t be complete without selkies, the mythical creatures that transition between the form of a seal and a human. It’s said that selkies come ashore, shed their sealskin, and dance beneath the moonlight. Their enchanting songs can leave anyone who listens spellbound. But be careful not to steal a selkie’s sealskin; without it, they can never return to the sea.
As the day unfolds at The Loch Ness Centre, there’s no shortage of delights to keep you entertained. Our immersive experience will transport you into the heart of Scottish mythology. Whether you’re seeking to catch a glimpse of Nessie, dance with selkies, or outsmart the siths, we’ve got you covered.
Who knows what wonders you might encounter under the watchful eyes of the Scottish faeries, ghillie dhu, kelpies, selkies, and, of course, the ever-elusive Nessie. Happy Halloween, and may your night be filled with wonder and enchantment!
