Shinty in the Highlands – A Sport Rooted in Tradition and Community

4th Feb 2025

Few sports are as deeply woven into the fabric of Highland life as shinty. A game of speed, skill, and fierce competition, it has been played in Scotland for centuries. Today, the sport continues to thrive, with clubs like Strathglass and Glenurquhart carrying on the legacy of their forebears while bringing the game into the modern era. The Loch Ness Centre is proud to support both clubs through shirt sponsorship and pitch-side advertising, reinforcing our commitment to local heritage and community engagement.

A Brief History of Shinty

Shinty, or “camanachd” in Gaelic, is one of Scotland’s oldest sports, with origins tracing back over 2,000 years. Played with a curved stick known as a “caman” and a small ball, it shares similarities with Irish hurling but has evolved into its own distinct game. Historically, shinty was not only a sport but also a way to train warriors in combat skills, promoting agility, endurance, and teamwork.

In the 19th century, shinty became more organised, leading to the formation of the Camanachd Association in 1893, the sport’s governing body. Today, it remains an integral part of Scottish culture, particularly in the Highlands, where rivalries are fierce, and the passion for the game is unwavering.
