Nessie, Love, and Indie Vibes: The Story Behind the Song

28th Sep 2023

Just after the Quest Weekend, an event that had Loch Ness enthusiasts from all around the world converging on the loch in search of its elusive resident, something unexpected happened. The Loch Ness Centre received an email from a band called Charles Can’t Breathe, accompanied by a link to their latest song, an enchanting tribute to none other than Nessie herself.

As we listened to their song and read about their inspiration, we couldn’t help but wonder: do they believe in Nessie? Is their music a testament to the enduring fascination that the legend of the Loch Ness Monster holds, or is it something more? Join us as we delve into the story behind Charles Can’t Breathe’s song, exploring the depths of their inspiration and uncovering the mystery that lies within their music.

“When it comes to creating music, inspiration can strike in the most unexpected ways. For us, the idea for our latest song was born during a casual jamming session in our rehearsal studio. Little did we know that this impromptu creation would evolve into something truly magical, blending the mystique of Loch Ness with the essence of a summer indie love song.

As the chords resonated and the melodies flowed, the lyrics I sang began to take shape. It was a warm, sun-drenched day, and the desire to craft a catchy summer indie love song was in the air. But fate had other plans. What started as a simple tune about love quickly took an intriguing turn as I began to sing about the legendary Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster.

We shared a laugh about the unexpected twist and thought, “Why not make it about Nessie?” It was a playful suggestion at first, but the more we thought about it, the more it felt right. Nessie had found her way into our song, and we couldn’t imagine it any other way. So, the song was officially christened, and we embraced the idea of blending summer romance with a touch of Loch Ness mystery.

On a deeper level, our song is not just about Nessie; it’s about the enigmatic and exhilarating feeling of having a crush. It captures that sense of mystery and excitement that comes with falling for someone. The lyrics may be whimsical, but they resonate with anyone who has ever experienced the thrill of young love.

For me, personally, the connection to Loch Ness runs deeper. My family hails from Inverness, and I have fond childhood memories of gazing out of the car window as we drove along the shores of Loch Ness. There was always that hope, that yearning, to catch a glimpse of something extraordinary beneath the surface. Those memories added a layer of authenticity to our song, a genuine connection to the legend that has captured the world’s imagination for generations.

As a band, we’ve always been drawn to stories of myths and mysteries. We believe in the power of the unseen, the unexplained, and the sense of wonder they bring. The legend of Nessie has a universal appeal that transcends borders, cultures, and generations. It’s a story that sparks curiosity and fosters a sense of community among those who share in its intrigue.

Our music, much like the legend of Nessie, brings people together. It unites us through shared emotions and experiences, and it celebrates the magic of the unknown. We, as a band, are all about fostering that sense of togetherness and wonder, and our song about Nessie perfectly encapsulates that spirit.

We hope you enjoy listening to our music as much as we enjoyed creating it, and that it inspires you to embrace the mysteries and magic of life.” Says Charles Can’t Breathe
